Pouring Living Water Over Your Life
Mar 03, 2022It’s important to ask big and make a part of your ongoing pattern to know where you're at and how to enlarge. It’s also important to understand a vital category of prayer and asking. We talk about it in Creating Your Best Life. It is what I call the unfair advantages that we as believers have.
We've got some incredible, unfair advantages! And one of those is our ability to ask in what I call the Creator's language. The Creator’s language is my way to express praying in the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Creator. Amen? Easy to make that connection, right?
We know in Genesis chapter 1 that the Spirit of God was hovering. And then God spoke and what happened? Power! Jesus was on the earth for 30 years before the Holy Spirit came on Him. Did He do any miracles during that time? Not one! The Holy Spirit came on Him at age 30 and there literally would not be enough room in the volumes to capture all the miracles He did in those three years. Why? Because of who? The Holy Spirit! And us praying in the Spirit is an advantage of asking in a powerful way that puts you into another level, in another dimension.
John 7:38-39 says, “He who believes in Me, as Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
What is this verse saying? It's saying that those who have received and pray in the Holy Spirit will flow rivers of living water. Now, let’s look at that word living. There's something very critical that you need to capture in the Greek. It comes from the word, zoí. And zoí means God's life. The best life! So when you and I pray in the Spirit, out of us flow rivers of zoí water. God, life-giving water!
I've thought about this from so many different angles. I grew up on a farm and every year we would prepare the ground through plowing. Then we would go out and we would plant seeds. And then what did we have to do? We would have to put water on it. And what would that water do? That water would bring life to it. And we would continue to water until it got to a point of harvest.
Praying in the Spirit gives you an unfair advantage over your life, over your family, over your businesses, and over your ministries. You have an unfair advantage in that you get to pour zoí water all over it, by praying in the Spirit. Do you see that? Life-giving water.
Let's say you have a situation at work. I do this all the time. I will say, okay, I'm going to pour living water into this situation right here. I need zoí. I need life-giving water. I'm going to pray about this situation. I need wisdom. And so what do I do? I begin to pray in the Spirit. Praying in the Spirit is a targeted thing that you can do. This is not something that we just ramble on about that is unfocused and undirected. No! You can direct that prayer by focusing and saying, okay, I'm going to pour living water into this relationship. I've got this business meeting coming up or I have this issue at church and I'm going to pour living water into that situation. And then you can begin to focus and pray living water into it.
Romans chapter 8 shows us that praying in the Spirit is perfect asking. Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings, which cannot be uttered. Now he who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God (Rom 8:26-27).
When you're praying in the Spirit, He is telling you what the mind of the Spirit is because He makes intercession for the saints, according to the will of God. And what is God's will? The very next verse. All things work together for the good of those who love God (Rom 8:28).
I have been in places where people who are not Spirit-filled use this verse. They don't pray in the Spirit but they pull out this verse when something bad happens. Well, we know all things work together for the good…
This verse is directly linked to the verses prior, which is praying in the Spirit. When I pray in the Spirit, I pray the perfect will of God into a situation. When I am praying over something and I pray in the Spirit, I'm pouring living zoí water, life-giving water, into that situation to affect a change. And it's perfect asking. If you want to ask perfectly over a situation, if you want to ask for what it is that God wants for your life, pray in the Spirit.
